RESTRICTIONS ON IMPORTS
Retailers Reaffirm Policv * (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, March 5.
Remits on issues affecting imports were adopted at today’s sitting of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation conference at Gisborne.
The Federation reaffirmed its previous import policy as follows:
“That the objective is the ultimate removal of all import licensing control and the protection of New Zealand industries by adequate import duties, but this policy is to be interpreted in the light of the particular circumstances of each case. In the event of direct control over imports being necessary to assist in balancing overseas payments, the federation reiterates its preference for some form of exchange allocation instead of overall import licensing. “The Government will be urged to set up with the minimum delay an industrial committee for the purpose of dealing with special appeals on grounds of undue hardship and anomalies connected with the recently imposed import selection scheme.”
