DAIRY PRODUCTS MARKETING
Commission’s Efforts Defended
The performance of New Zealand s dairy exporters in making m « rk e t s outside the United Kingdom did not compare unfavourably with that of the meat exporters, the Dairy Industry Information Service said today. It was commenting on a statement by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, which expressed concern over the efficiency of the marketing methods used by the New Zealand Dairy Products Marketing Commission, and claimed that private enterprise had a better record in the meat export trade.
A spokesman for the dairy industry said that the great bulk of scales of dairy products to markets abroad were made for the dairy commission by private firms in New Zealand, in the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. Far from being denigrated, their work should be praised, he said. Dairy markets all over the world were restricted today by import bans or quotas, yet exports were made from New Zealand to over 50 countries or destinations. Last season, out of 314,000 tons of dairy products exported, 49,000 tons, or 16 per cent, were sold to markets other than Britain.
