Breeding Ewes Sell Well At Rakaia Fair

The prevailing good prices for breeding ewes were maintained at the Rakaia ewe fair yesterday, in spite of increased entries in all sections. Quality stock sold well, and there. was keen competition from the moderately-sized gallery for the better lines. Entries totalled 9506, an increase of 1794 over last year’s. The greatest increase was in the two-tooth section, entries being 2702, compared with the 1957 fair tally of 1828. Bidding was steady, and though the tone was slightly less even than at Hawarden and Amberley • fair, prices were up a good two to three shillings. Local ewes were all in similar condition to those in other years and reflected the general abundance of feed. Some ewes appeared to have been shorn a little late—particularly in some of the two-tooth classes —and did not sell quite as readily as those carrying more wool. There were many entries in the adult sheep classes from outside the Rakaia district, being offered for undisclosed vendors. Several were from the far south. The section varied considerably in quality, but the better lines easily found buyers. The offering of ewe lambs was also increased and, although, there were some plain and indifferent lines for which bidding was hesitant, prices generally were satisfactory. The sale of breeding rams and stud ewes at the end of the adult section was well supported, and there were few passings. A line of 33 rams from Scott Bros. (Dunsandel) sold well and except for three passings the line was cleared at an average of better than 27 guineas, with the top price of 33 guineas being obtained for a pen of four Southdown-Border Leicester cross rams. Southdowns sold to 31 guineas, also offered by Scott Bros.; Ryelands to» 20 guineas: Border Leicesters to 26 guineas; South Suffolks to 24 guineas; and Southdown-Ryeland cross rams up to 27 guineas. Two-tooths Top price for fine wools was recorded by John Irwin (Aldersyde) for the third year in succession for a pen of 79 two-tooth Corriedales which brought 995, and a pen of 82 offered by C. G. Robinson (Mdreton Marsh) followed it closely at 945. Top price for the section went to an undisclosed vendor from Dunedin, whose 130 Romneys realised £5 ss. In the adult section, two entries of 69 and 140 four and fiveyear Corriedale z ewes, also offered by C. G. Robinson, sold well at 65s but were topped by two undisclosed vendors with 210 at 70s and 227 at the same figure.
