TROTTING FRESH RUNNERS AT HUTT PARK TODAY

Several well-performed fresh horses are in the fields for the concluding day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Hutt Park to-

day. Notable newcomers from the North Island in the Dominion Handicap, the main event and first leg of the double, are Light Call, Vesta and Silent Scot Fourth Edition and Impresario will strengthen the possibility of a southern win. The decision does not appear to rest entirely with the new candidates, and those which raced with credit on the first day should again be prominent Guard’s Brigade, the unlucky runner in the Summer Handicap on Thursday, has been a winner over two miles twice this season. Guard’s Brigade could easily atone for his mistake on the first .day when/ after appearing to have the Summer Handicap • won, he tangled with 30 yards to go.* Monterey was a fast finisher for fifth, after breaking at the start and covering extra ground on the first day. Monterey has a good record at Hutt Park, having won two races there this season, and with better luck in the running . today should take part in the finish. Strong Bracket The Pukekohe trainer, J. K. Hughes, tt will parade a strong bracket. Light Call and Vesta, and they will probably be . the best of the other runners off the front. Included among Light Call’s five wins this season was the Quin Memorial, two miles, at Te Awamutu in October, and Vesta has been successful three times at the distance. She won the Featherston Handicap at Hutt Park and the Masterton Trotting Cup in November, and the FreyIberg Handicap at Epsom in December. She has failed in two starts since, but both were over shorter distances..

Fourth Edition and Impresario, which will share the 12-yard mark, both have speed and stamina. Fourth Edition has .failed to win a race so far this term, but has been runner-up on four occasions, twice over two miles. At his last start, in the sprint at New Brighton he was beaten for the major honours in the last stride by Rola JVeyor. In that rare, Impresario was a creditable fourth.

Impresario was a sprint winner at Methven in September, and a week later outstayed a good field to win the two-mile President’s Handicap at Ashburton. His latest effort at New Brighton indicated that Impresario is again close to winning form. Blue Jay, the Summer Handicap winner on Thursday, will find the task of giving starts of up to 24 yards t;o some capable pacers much more difficult. Scottish Command, which added to his handicap on the first day by tangling at the start, and was forced over extra ground in the middle stages of the race, is expected to do best of those further back. Chance for Park Dillon Although there is a wealth of first-day form in the second leg of the double—the City Handicap —Park Dillon, a strong finisher for second to Gay Wanderer in the Telegraph Handicap on Thursday, is generally expected to gain his second win for the season Caucus and Countess Derby, winner and runner-up respectively in the Taita Handicap, Fox Able, an erratic but speedy pacer which was placed in the Air Force Handicap, and Gay Polka, third behind Gay Wanderer and Park Dillon in the Telegraph Handicap are other first-day form candidates with sound prospects. Gay Baron, which disappointed in the sprint on Thursday but which raced well at Auckland at his previous two appearances, appeals as the most likely improver in the field. The weather in Wellington has remained fine since' the first»day of the meeting, .and the track should be in good order.
