CURRENT NOTES

Miss Elizabeth Hannah, of the Country Library Service at Hamilton and formerly of Christchurch, will leave Wellington for a visit to Britain and Europe by the Rangitiki next Saturday. Miss Hannah is now staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs T. R. Hannah. Shirley.

Miss Noela Perfect gave a talk to the Kaiapoi Young Wives’ Group recently on her experiences in the United States while she was there studying ballet.

Talks on dancing, elocution, and music lessons for children vvere given by Misses Phyllis Gale and Mary Hopewell and Dr. Vernon Griffiths to a recent meeting of the homemakers’ branch of the Catholic Women’s League. Nine pupils of Miss Gale danced an Irish jig and an eight-handed reel to illustrate the talk on dancing. A presentation was made to the Rev. Father T. C. Curnow, chaplain to the league, who was recently appointed parish priest of Hanmer Springs. The Rev. Dr. B. Ashley was welcomed as the .new chaplain.

The Toe H Women’s Association has received notice that Lady Cobham has consented to become its patron. This was announced yesterday by the Dominion president of the association (Miss Edith Tod).

Mr A. Bissett gave a talk on traffic control, and illustrated it with films, to members of the Christchurch branch of the League for the Hard of Hearing last evening. He also showed travel films.

The annual meeting of St. Anne’s branch of the Mother’s Union (St. Martin’s-Opawa parish) was held recently in the church hall after a service in church conducted by the vicar the Rev. R. O. Williams. Three new members will be admitted at a service in March. The following officers were elected: president (enrolling member), Mrs W. C. Brittenden; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. W. Branthwaite and N. R.' Wilson; secretary, Mrs J. L. Grant; treasurer. Mrs A. R. Mumford; committee, Mesdames G. W. Logan, R. H. King, N. Bachelor and J. Simpson.

Mrs J. Moffitt gave a floral demonstration at the monthly meeting of the Belfast Garden Club. Mrs Huntingdon presided. Competition winners were Mesdames Eutt, Harrold, Arps, Crundwell. Finch and Johnston and Messrs Huntingdon and McFadden.

A 1920-1930 group of Sunnyside nurses met recently at the home of Mrs Hassall at Rangiora. As the group has been meeting annually, it was decided to form a club. A roster was drawn up for duty one day a week with one of the members who is m bad health. The next meeting will be held at Sumner in February next year.

The February meeting of the Christchurch Central Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held recently at the Cambridge Terrace Methodist Sunday school, when Mrs I. Wilson presided and led devotions.' Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs H. S. Griffiths and Mrs J. Harding in the loss of their husbands. Remits were discussed for the Dominion convention to be held at Palmerston North. Mrs H. A. Hunt will be the delegate from the Christchurch branch.

Mrs W. Tisch presided at the February meeting of the Red-cliffs-Mount Pleasant Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. Two new members were welcomed. It was decided to spend £5 on knitting wool and £lO on material for making clothing for children overseas and for local emergency. Knitted and sewn clothing was received, including men’s hand knitted socks, the work of a 90-year-old knitter. A report on the Good Neighbour Service was given by Mrs C. G. Crawford. Mrs Tisch was congratulated on the Red Cross floral set piece designed by her and executed under her direction for the recent Floral Festival.
