Kerry Williams Has Bad Luck
Three times national senior i harrier champion and a former 1 three-mile title-holder, Kerry ‘ Williams seems likely to fail in , his attempts to gain selection as , a national traok representative. ■ He has suffered a series of misfortunes and has had the car-
tilages removed from both knees I The latest set-back to his track I preparation is an injury to an | ankle, initially caused at the meetI ing at Nelson, when he competed | in the invitation mile race with | Murray Halberg and Neville Scott I last month. Subsequent competii tion has aggravated the injury. I Mile Title After winning the Canterbury I mile title in 4min 13.1 sec—a frac- | tion outside the provincial rel cord—in his first run in 12 days, I Williams went to Dunedin to comI pete in the Royal sports meeting I last week. Before the race, WilI liams sought specialist attention I and was advised not to run for I another four weeks. It was a grave disappointment I for Williams,.for under the guidI ance of Mr E. Cameron, he has I been more careful in his. approach I to training and competition than I ever before. I His chances of selection will I now have to wait until the OlymI pic Games in 1960. when stan- | dards for selection will no doubt I be higher than for the Empire I Games. In the meantime he will aim at retaining his national harrier title » if his leg responds well to treatment. Williams is the only athlete to win' both a national, junior and senior harrier title.
