Minute Heart Sounds.— A device that makes it possible to hear very faint heart sounds that have previously gone unnoticed has been developed in the United States by Dr. Dale Groom of the College of South Carolina and Yro T. Sihvonen of the General Motors Corporation. It is hoped that the new instrument will aid in earlier detection of heart disease. Called a capacitance heart-sound pick-up, the device records tiny movements of the chest wall; rather than the actual sounds of the beating heart. It does this by converting vibrations of the chest wall directly into electrical signals. These are then amplified for photography or for tape recording.—New York.
