Desert Road Open Again

(New Zealand Prefs Association) AUCKLAND, February 28. The 95-foot Bailey bridge was completed across the Tongariro river at Turangi this morning and the Desert road was open for traffic from about 10.30 a.m. The Ministry of Works is now engaged in consolidating the repairs they have made along the Taupd-Turangi highway. Workmen repairing the Hinemaiaraia power-house, which provides Taupo with electricity, now believe the flood damage to the equipment 1 may be less than was feared. The machinery is being stripped down and dried, but the full extent of the damage will not be known until each part is tested.
