AIRLIFT FROM AUCKLAND
Passengers And Freight
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. An airlift of freight which has accumulated because of the floods started today and will continue -witnout let up. Pilots of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Bristol Freighters and National Airways Corporation aircraft are waiting only until their planes are unloaded and refilled before taking off again for Wellington or Christchurch. Many passengers are also being carried today. The N.A.C. terminal at Auckland looked like a rendezvous for refugees. The corporation fitted in two extra passenger flights to Paraparaumu, to make a total of 10 today. More and more freight is pouring into the airways terminal but the aircraft are clearing it “fairly steadily.”
The Auckland Aero Club has had a terrific increase in the demand for its aircraft. The six available planes are being hired almost continuously by people wanting to view the floods from the air. So far there has been no need to use the aircraft for emergency flights.
