Income Tax Rebate
Sir,—“Nearly 76” repeats a common error by stating that “Mr Nash handed £lOO to those who did not need it.” The cry, “W? will give you £lOO off your income tax bill,” was merely sucker-bait to deceive gullibles into voting Labour. The bait was duly swallowed, but the
so-called promise was political trickery. In front of me is an income tax demand tissued by the National Government) reading: “Income tax, £640; less annual rebate, £75; total payable, £565.” The amount now payable is £540, being a reduction of but £25, not £lOO. The taxpayer concerned realised this position from the start, and has no complaints whatever. But it is becoming tiresome to hear illinformed people constantly bleating that certain taxpayers were “given £100” by the Labour Government, which has given nothing to anybody, except unemployment, and plenty of it, in the very near future.—Yours, etc., FACTS. February 27, 1958.
