NEW QUARTERS FOR A.A.
Consideration This Year
The Automobile Association ‘ (Canterbury) will consider, this year, the erection of a new head- ’ quarters building on its site in - Hereford street, next to the Occidental Hotel and overlooking Latimer square. A special com- » mittee has already had prelim- ’ inary talks. When the council . of the association met last even- * ing a member wrote saying others would agree that the office and service staff were hampered by cramped quarters, and that the present finances and the sale of the present Worcester street
property would make the scheme fully feasible. “Stop” Lights for Warrant.— The inspection of “stop” lights ? (actuated by braking) for warI rants of fitness is supported. Members considered that the compulsory installation of these units . would do much to aid road safety. • especially as a hand signal is not obligatory in an emergency. i. Symbol Signs.— About 50 lymbol signs (indicating the contow and safe speed) are being erected at dangerous curves on . the highway between Christchurch and the Conway river. r The safe speed has been calculated by a special instrument of the Transport Department. Identifying Power-Cycles.—The South Island Motor Union will
again be urged to seek regulations ‘ requiring power-cycles to carry a number plate across the front instead of on the side as at present. The association believes this would give other road users warning to expect more than a bicycle speed. Hamner Motels.— The first two motels at the A.A. motor camp, Hanmer Springs, were occupied on Christmas Eve and have since earned £lO2 in revenue. The other two will be finished in two or three weeks. All four have been booked as far ahead as Easter and the May holidays. Ashburton Lounge.— The members’ lounge at Ashburton will be redecorated, recarpeted, and refurnished. Motor Show.— The association will enter an exhibit of its service vehicles in the international motor show to be held by the Canterbury Junior Chamber of Commerce in the King Edward Barracks at the end of March. Third-party Insurance. — The Council voted in favour of the amalgamation of classes four and five (private and business vehicles) for third-party insurance.
