CONSECRATION OF NEW BISHOP

Dr. R. J. Delargy, Of Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. In St. Patrick’s Cathedral today the most Rev. R. J. Delargy, D.D., was consecrated titular Bishop of Hirina and auxiliary to Archbishop Liston, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland. More than 1000 people crowded into the lofty cathedral to witness the impressive ceremony. The consecrating prelate was Archbishop Liston, assisted by Archbishop P. T. B. McKeefry. Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of New Zealand, and Bishop J. Kavanagh, Bishop of Dunedin, as cd-consecrators. Also present in the sanctuary was Bishop E. M. Joyce, Bishop of Christchurch, and Abbot F. Cashman, Trappist abbot of Mount Melleray, Ireland, who is visiting New Zealand. The master of ceremonies was the Rev. A. P. Curran, administrator of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Rev. B. Courtenay, Rector of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, read the Papal Mandate of Appointment. A clergy dinner in honour of Bishop Delargy was held at Sacred Heart College after the ceremony. Bishop Joyce congratulated the new bishop on his appointment.
