Magee Betters Standard Time (New Zealana Press Association) ( AUCKLAND, February 27. B. Magee, the national six-mile champion, established a New Zealand record of 29min 39.45ec for the 10,000 metres when he narrowly beat M. G. Halberg in a special invitation event at the Western Suburbs open meeting last night at Grey Lynn Park. The 10,000 metres is a new distance to be recognised by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and the time betters the standard of 30min set by it. Magee’s performance was excellent as the track was extremely heavy after the recent rains. Magee headed Halberg by one yard at the six-mile mark, which they covered in 28min 43.6sec—9.5sec outside the national record. Halberg led for most of the first three miles, and after that the positions alternated. Halberg’s times were almost identical with Magee’s throughout the run, and he finished with a time of 29min 39.65ec. The New Zealand discus and shot 1 put champion. L. R. Mills, made three unofficial throws which beat his national record of 160 ft lOin. With his third throw the discus landed 168 ft sin away. His first two throws were 162 ft 2Jin and 165 ft 6sin. No official recognition was possible because the circle did not conform to regulations.
