Japan To Buy Nuclear Reactor
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright ■ LONDON, February 19. Japan has invited tenders from three British firms for the purchase of a Calder Hall-type nuclear reactor. Announcing this, Dr. Diagoro Yasukawa, the leader of a Japanese mission which has been, in England investigating the possibilities of buying a British reactor, said the reactor would have to be able to withstand the earth tremors to which Japan is subject. Dr. Yasukawa said it seemed probable that the problem of making a reactor earthquake-proof could be solved. The plan which the mission at present had in mind was that the entire installation should be put on a rigid raft so that in the event of an earthquake the whole structure would move together. Dr. Yasukawa said that Japan wanted a 150 megawatt power plant. Calder Hall, in north-west England, the world’s first full-scale atomic power reactor, is already supplying electricity to British homes. Usually well-informed sources said that the cost of a Calder Hall-type reactor would be between £20,000,000 and £30,000,000.
