PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
The Waimairi surfer, R. Ealem, has been in fine form this season, and has a good chance of winning a national title in the surf ski event at South Brighton today. Ealem, who works on a farm at Ashburton, comes to Christchurch each week-end to compete for his club. He has a most unorthodox method of training, but it is bearing results. While digging, he sits on the ground and simulates a paddling motion with the shovel. This unusual action has done much to strengthen his arm, leg, and back muscles, as it is one of the most gruelling exercises one can undertake.
A most impressive display of surf ski-ing was given by the Waimairi pair, R. Ealem and J. Hughes, in the senior surf ski relay on the third day of the Canterbury surf championships last Sunday. Ealem was runner-up to D. McLeay (Waihi) for the national surf ski title last year, and is in even better form this year.
The University lock forward, R. Hockley, has kept in excellent condition throughout the
summer by taking part in events conducted at the weekly meetings of the New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club. Although he does not compete at the athletic meetings a t Rugby Park,

Parcell was second in the mile and although unplaced in the halfmile he was unofficially timed at 2min 2.2 sec.
