Invitation By Rebels
(Rec. 10 pjn.) SINGAPORE, February 21. Lieutefiant-Colonel Maluddin Simbolon, the Foreign Minister in the rebel Central Sumatran Cabinet, tonight invited diplomats in Jakarta to Padang, headquarters of the revolutionary regime. Colonel Simbolon said over Padang Radio: “The revolutionary Government has no objection to representatives coming to areas under its control to see for themselves.” However, if any diplomats wanted to come they should inform the revolutionary Government on what date and by what means they planned to arrive, he said.
Colonel Simbolon repeated an earlier rebel guarantee of safety for the lives and property of foreigners in the rebel-held areas, “so long as they carry out the instructions of the revolutionary Government and do not oppose the revolutionary Government in any way.”
Observers in Tunis said tonight that in the present tension an incident could happen at any time, as at Remada, and a mistake by a subordinate on the spot, on either side, could start bigger trouble. The Tunisians say that French troops are ■ concentrating on the Algerian frontier.
Road blocks in and around Tunis were reinforced tonight and manned by members of the ruling Neo-Destour party’s youth organisation, in khaki uniforms.
