HUSKIES FROM ANTARCTIC
Eight On Way To Britain (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. Feb. 17. Eight Antarctic travellers boarded the Gallic in Wellington today. They were huskies which are being shipped to England, where they will be found homes by the R.SJ’.C.A. The dogs were bought in Greenland by the trans-Antarctic Committee and used for reconnaissance purposes in the Antarctic and for transporting some of Dr. Vivian Fuchs’s supplies. The team pulled a 10001 b load about 30 miles a day. The animals —Guy, Nanok, Peso, Bouncer, Kernek, Mutt, Ivik and Matio—are three to four years old and black, cream and brindled. They weigh between 601 b and 801 b each and eat 21b of meat a day. During the voyage they will be kept on deck and tended by three Merchant Navy cadets.
The secretary of the Ross Sea Committee (Mr A. S. Helm) said today that there were about 60 huskies with the trans-Antarctic expedition. Expedition members had grown fond of the animals and did not like parting with them. Some of the dogs had been given- to the Americans at
Little America and others were being shipped to New Zealand in the Endeavour. A few New Zealanders had asked if they could obtain animals, but that would depend on quarantine restrictions.
