Marching ASHBURTON TITLES

Twenty-Six Teams Compete In spite of ovencast weather •nd drizzling rain at times, there was a good crowd at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday afternoon to watch the Ashburton Marching Association’s annual Ashburton marching championships. Twenty-six teams from Christchurch, Timaru, Fairlie, Waimate, Oamaru, and Ashburton competed, in grades from midgets to A grade. Held in the picturesque setting of the Domain Oval, the teams made an attractive picture as they performed display marching to the music of the Ashburton Silver Band and the Ashburton Highland Pipe Band. Competition was close in the A grade, and there was little between Montrose (Timaru), which won the main marching sections, and the second and third teams, Waimate Kilties (Waimate) and Kia-Ora (Oamaru) t School for the Deaf (Christchurch) dominated the C grade, winning all sections by a clear margin. Austinettes (Christchurch) and Gold Star (Timaru) proved the leading teams in the junior grade. In the midgets grade the Ashburton team. Vikings, was third in both the contest marching and the marching aggregate, and won the costume competition. Awards were presented by Mrs D O. Digby as follows: A Grade. —Best leader: Lordships (Christchurch), 49 points lost, 1; Waimate Kilties (Waimate). 53, 2; Kia-Ora (Oamaru), 58, 3.
