N.Z. ELECTRIC POWER PLANS

Mr Nash “Not Keen On Strait Cable”

New Zealand’s power position would be examined by.the Government from a whole, electrical point of view, not just from the hydro-electric, geothermal, or nuclear angles, said the Prime Minister . (Mr Nash) in Christchurch yesterday* “The question is: how can we get what we want?” he said. - Nevertheless, he was hot keen on the Cook Strait cable plan/he said. The Benmore scheme on the Waitaki river would go ahead, and he w(hild like to see more industry in the South Island. This would not be at the expense of the North Island; there was room for development there too. The two islands could not be divided economically, but it would be a more profitable venture to restrict the Benmore output to the South Island. .. There were geothermal power sources in the North which had so far not been even looked at, but no decision to expand this means of power generation would be made until the pbwer position had been reviewed as a whole, said Mr. Nash.
