KASENO FAVOURED FOR WESTPORT MILE RACE

Because of his recent encouraging form in much stronger company, at Trentham and Riccarton, Kaseno is likely to be a short-priced favourite for the Arthur Clouston Handicap, a mile event for horses in hack class, at the Westport Jockey Club’s summer meeting, which opens today. » The Gold Script colt, which is trained at Westport by his owner, Mr A. G. Colvin, was probably feeling the effects of a strenuous campaign at Trentham last month, when at his last start in the Lyttelton Hack Handicap, one mile, at Riccarton, a fortnight ago, he failed to run on as solidly as expected, and was beaten into fourth place almost four lengths from the winner. Bagman. A week earlier, he had been a fast finisher for third to Compensate and Coffee in the Kelburn Hack Handicap at Trentham, and at his two previous starts at the meeting finished close behind the placegetters after a slow beginning on each occasion. Provided Kaseno has freshened up since Riccarton he should have little difficulty in beating the moderate field today. Toka, Happy, and Seascrape have been scratched for the first leg of the double, the Morley Handicap, in which the Riccarton-trained candidates, Tamarisk, JCeep Time, and Princess Neptune, are expected to dispute the finish. Bon Salut, Fickle Jade, and Bonny Pippin are a likely trio in the second leg, the Murchison Hack Handicap. Kerralyn, Air Bank, and Ghana were scratched yesterday for the Trial Stakes, and Winkles and Uproar have been withdrawn from the Coalfields Hack Handicap. Royal Roma has been scratched in both trotting events, and Lille Bolero will not fulfil her engagement in the Hector Trot Handicap. The weather in Westport has been fine since Wednesday, and with the likelihood of a continued fine spell the track should be firm and fast. DOUBLE AT TE RAPA Ho Choy-Maori Legend “The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Feb. 14. The promising Te Rapa gelding. Ho Choy, will be a popular fancy for the Storey Memorial Handicap on his home track today. At his second attempt at a middle distance. Ho Choy scored decisively in the Rotorua Cup last week. He has done exceptionally well since. The first leg of the double at the Waikato Racing Club’s summer meeting, the Storey Memorial Handicap, has attracted only 10 runners. Everything points to a victory for Ho Choy. He has won six races, three at Rotorua and three at Te Rapa—two of the few left-handed tracks in the north—and he is at his best when the ground is really hard, as it seems certain to be today. If Ho Choy is beaten, Sea Hornet may be the one to take the honours. Sea Hornet has not been successful this season, but his condition cannot be faulted, ind he showed that he was at a high peak of fitness when he worked boldly over a mile on Tuesday and Thursday. There is a limit field in the second leg, the Waikato Stayers' Plate. Five or six of the runners have useful recent form, but the majority are five, six and seven-year-olds which seem destined to remain in the hack class for a good while. As none of the acceptors has attempted two miles before, betting looks certain to cover a wide range. The favourite may be the top-weight, Maori Legend. He won impressively at Rotorua, and with 8-13 he looks well enough placed for another success. .. Waipari, Moataata, Consider, and Isle of Capri may be his toughest rivals. The weather has remained fine and the track is certain to be very hard. Selections:— Frankton High-weight.—Bon Jour, Revolver, Prone. Whatawhata Hack Handicap.—First Division: Stylish Officer, Beech Park, Lavish Countess. Second Division: Happy Laughter. Willie Winkie, Ann Ford. Juvenile Handicap.—Lawful, Captain Corcoran. Modern Fair* Lady Norrie .Stakes. —Great Rose. Summer Glow, True Bridge. Storey Memorial Handicap.—Ho Choy, Sea Hornet, Black Raven. President’s Handicap: Gay Sailor. Rebellious, Esparto. Stayers’ Plate.—Maori Legend, Waipari. Moataata. Beerescourt Handicap. Archdeacon, Geta, Calibrae.

BLOODSTOCK FOR U.S. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) INGLEWOOD (California), February 13. A move- designed to stimulate the importing into the United States of more horses from Australia. New Zealand and South America was announced today by the general manager of the Hollywood Park Racecourse, Mr James Stewart. He said that becausd the seasons below the Equator were opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere the period of “Southern” thoroughbred foaling customarily followed August 1 instead of January 1 as in the United States and Europe. Thus imported horses from southern countries were at feast six months younger than those in the same age group in the United States and faced an unfair situation when weighted on the accepted age scale. Mr Stewart said that at Hollywood Park, Southern Hemisphere horses would be given weight concessions, beginning at opening on May 8. } *
