MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FRIDAY (Before Mr L. W. Ritchie, S.M.) SHOPLIFTER FINED Dorothy May Josling, aged 56 (Mr S. R. Dacre), appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing a tin of coffee on January 24. Mr Dacre said the present charge involved an unusual and tragic case of a woman who had lived in affluence and had been a leader in cnurch affairs. She had had rather a hard life and was annoyed when she picked up the tin and walked out of the shop, knowing that she would be apprehended. Counsel made a special appeal for an order forbidding the publication of the accused’s name in the interests of the family. The Magistrate said that shoplifting must be stopped if at all possible; accused knew quite well what she was doing at the time of the offence. Publication of the names in charges of shoplifting was part of the penalty and a deterrent to others. Josling was fined £l5. ADMITTED TO PROBATION George Harold Briggs, aged 32 (Mr W. G. P. Cuningham), was admitted to probation for two years when he appeared for sentence on a charge of being in possession of a firearm at Spencerville when drunk on February 6. He was also ordered to abstain from intoxicating liquor during his term of probation. > THEFT “The police statement of facts was incorrect, in that they said you had not had any previous convictions,” said the Magistrate to Hilda Marjorie Wilson, aged 45 (Mr W. G. P. Cuningham), who was appearing for sentence on a charge of the theft of money and goods, of total value £l4 6s 6d. “The mistake has ueen acknowledged, but I should not have granted you an interim suppression of your name.” The Probation Officer had said that Wilson was the unstable neurotic product of an unsatisfactory unt-.nging and adult life, said the Magistrate. In view of the fact that it was 11 years since her last conviction he be lenient with her. She was fined £l5 and ordered make restitution. REMANDED Jack Sydney . .lentine Bott, aged 51, a labourer (Mr J. G. Leggat) v. as remanded to February 20 on a charge of being found in charge of a motor truck in Harper avenue while under the influence of drink or drugs.
