Tennis Team Plays Wellington Today
{CANTERBURY’S tywn tennis representatives will play their first major match of the season today, against Wellington, at Wilding Park As usual, Wellington is not sending its strongest team for this contest, and Canterbury players and enthusiasts alike will be disappointed at the nonappearance of R. S. McKenzie, J. R. McDonald, B. R. Boon, Miss S. Cox, and Miss D. King. Playing in the top position for the visiting team will be J. B. Souter, who is well-known to Canterbury players. His win in the Canterbury men’s singles title last year at the age of 14. beating Canterbury’s leading players. A. L. Blackwell and A. D. L. Hunter in the process, stamped him as a player of uncommon promise. This year. Souter has shown good form in Wellington, and gained valuable experience in a Wilding Shield challenge with Auckland. In second position for Wellington will be B. M. Mackie. In last year’s fixture. Mackie was the only Wellington player to lose his singles match, when he played C. W. Pritchard, 3-6, 9-11. P. J. Tavlor. who beat M. C. Healey in last year’s match, is this year olayin«? third for .Wellington, and the other members of the men’s team will be F. Scarlett, V. J. Hargreaves. and R. L. Davis. Women's Team Playing in the top positions in the Wellington women’s team will be the promising young players. Misses F. Cliff and J. Kent. These two players lost their singles last year to Miss G. Hopkinson and Mrs J. McKay respectively, and they will be meeting stronger opposition today. The third player will be the 17-year-old Miss M. Jphnston, and the other members of the team will be Miss A. Brunt. Mrs £. Wentzell, and Mrs T. McGregor. Apart from the omission of Misses J. Davison and J. Lambert. the Canterbury team is the strongest available for the province. Miss B. Nelson, who is now living in Wellington, will be travelling down to play against the visiting team. Miss L. Luxton. who had an easy win. over Miss G. Tompkins in last year’s fixture, may be playing in second position. The other members of the team will be Mlrs Hopkinson, Who Is unbeaten in inter-club mstches
this season, Mrs McKay, and Misses D. Norrie and B. Webster. Pritchard, the only player un- ; beaten in the senior men’s com- : petition, has been in good form ; this season, and should extend his record of victories today. The consistent Elmwood players, Blackwell and Hunter, played well in • the 1957 fixture, with' a win ;n the doubles over the top'Welling- J ton pair. Boon and M. L. Dunn. The young C. G. Judge should be 2 untroubled to win his matches, 1 and B- W. Crofts (University), 1 who was runner-up in the Can- i terbur men's singles, and B.
