POSTPONEMENT OF TRAINING
P.A.Y.E. Taxation’s Effect On Job The changeover to P.A.Y.E. taxation required a serviceman to alter most ledger machines used for payroll work, said Mr J. B. Sutton, of Burroughs Ltd., before the Military Training Postponements Committee yesterday. He was appearing before the committee to request 12 months’ postponement of military training for a member of the staff, I. J. MacKay, who is employed as a serviceman. pie machines had a control unit preset to the particular type of work, he said. If any alteration was required the whole panel had to be stripped down and completely rebuilt. These alterations to the machines required,- for some machines, five to six hours* work and for others 16 to 30 hours work, said Mr Sutton. The number of his company’s machines in Christchurch affected by P.A.Y.E. were 100 to 150. There were two persons employed on this work—one of them McKay—and the alterations had to be completed by the end of April, he said. It’was not possible to get a replacement from another city as this work was going on everywhere. It was not the company’s policy to work overtime as this alteration work required great concentration. The committee granted a postponement for 12 months. The committee comprised Mr W. K. L. Dougall (chairman), and Messrs R. H. Webb and J. H. Ward. Mr N. R.
