Sportsman’s Notebook TOURNAMENT FOR COUNTRY TENNIS PLAYERS ARRANGED

A new venture by the Canter- ] bury Lawn Tennis Sub-associations 1 this season—the holding of a ' special tournament at Wilding I Park—is expected to draw keen < support from country players. < The sub-associations produce 1 several players of some ability 1 each season, but in the past they have not had the chance of play- I ing in a' tournament confined to country members. Even in the Browning Shield competition, which is divided into sections, several top players do not have ' the chance of competing against ’ some other top players. This tournament should achieve . its objective of providing more j competition for country players ■ It is hoped to make it an annual fixture. The Canterbury sub-associa-tions comprise Ellesmere, Hurunui. Malvern. Mid-Canterbury North Canterbury and Banks . Peninsula. Because Wilding Park , is the most central venue, the tournament : will be played there on the hard courts. It win be ( played over two week-ends— , March 1 and 2, and March 8 and , 9—but. the time win be extended , if necessary. Entries win dose , on February 15. The tournament, which is a , fixture sub-associations’ adminis- - trators have been attempting to arrange for some time, .will provide sections for seniors and juniors. Service To Motor Sport Mr J. Brewer, secretary, of the Motor Racing Club, which organises the Lady Wigram Trophy race, has been one of the busiest men in Christchurch this week. A i former racing motor-cyclist, who graduated to cars many years ago, Mr Brewer is one of the out- ■ standing administrators-of motor [ sport in Canterbury. He is a ' former member of the Associai tion of New Zealand Car Clubs' executive, and was one of the founders of the Motor Racing Club which took over control of the Wigram event after the Canterbury Car Club abandoned it in 1850. Secondary School Tennis The same players as last year will represent Canterbury secondary schools at the annual B.P. lawn tennis tournament at Gisborne on January 28, 29 and 30, I after die conclusion of the national junior tournament at Palmerston North. They are: C. G. Judge (Boys’ High School), G. Moss (Linwood High School). Lois I Mardon (Avonside Girls* High ' School) and Kay Brander (St Margaret’s College). Canterbury has had great success in this tournament in the last few years. In 1954, Miss J. Davidson, of Canterbury, took the girls’ title. The next year was a triumph for the province when A D. Huston beat L A, Gerrard (Auckland), who was later to become a Davis Cup player, in the boys* final, and Miss Davidson held her title. In 1958. Miss Davidson again won the girls’ title, beating Miss A Emery (Waikato) in the final for the second year in succession, but the boys’ title went to R. Wong, of Auckland, who also beat, Gerrard. JLast year the boys’ title returned to Caterbury through a win by Judge. He beat J. B. Souter, then of Northland, in the final, and Souter at that time held the Canterbury men’s singles title. * * * Cycling At Games Cycling at the Empire Games will include a 120-mile road race. This event will be held on a hilly course from Southerndown, about 20 miles from Cardiff. The course, which has been described as a perfect circuit, is partly coastal, partly inland, and it runs through the scenic Vale of Glamorgan. * * * Return To Christchurch D. L, Hickey, a very sound Rugby utility back for Marist and Canterbury a few years ago, will return to Christchurch as a resident at the beginning of next month, this time as the Rev. Father D. L. Hickey. He will be attached to the parish of St Mary’s, Manchester street A bright constructive player. Father Hickey will be of great assistance in the coaching of Rugby players from the St Mary’s Convent School and St Christopher’s Boys* Club. • • • Bowls The last rounds of the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s inter- - elub competitions for the Manning Cup and three .fours tournament will be decided on Saturday. lit the Manning cup series. Elmwood, with 177 points, leads St Albans with 182 points and ’ Spreydon is third with 161 points: Ghe new system ot allocation of

points seems to have been justified, for in the past the clubs with a large number of teams in the competition had very little 1 chance against the clubs with : only one or two teams competing. s Elmwood has a large number of i teams. < The concluding round of the * three fours, with Elmwood, United No. 2 and Fendalton m t the funning for the title, should I be interesting. Elmwood has • had seven wins and United Six ' and these two teams will meet ! on Saturday morning. .Should United win, there may have to be ) a play off. This will only be > necessary if Fendalton, which has ; 64 points in the second section, ; loses. * * * Trap Shooting The prominent Christchurch 1 Gun Club Trapshooter, S. W. 1 Geddes, showed excellent form f when competing in clay target , shoots conducted by the Otago i and Southland Clubs recently. - Geddes recorded'his greatest sue- ' cess at the WakatlpU Club’s tour- , nament held at Arthur’s Point . near Queenstown. In the major 1 trophy match of the day, Geddes, 1 with V. G. Phtterson (Mosgiel) ■ and R. McMath (Balfour) were , the only competitors out of a 1 field of 84 to break possibles in 1 the match. After a short shootoff, Patterson took the major trophy with Geddes runner-up. ( • * » Welsh Rugby Although inter-club ' competition has always been the basis of Welsh Rugby football,' there are indications that an inter-county competition, similar to New Zealand’s inter-provincial competition, may soon be instituted. Seven counties are affiliated to the Welsh Counties’ Association. The competition will present difficulties because of the uneven strength of the Rugby in these provinces. There are 65 clubs in Glamorgan, headed by Cardiff and Swansea, whereas there are only two in Breckonshire, another of the seven counties. * * * Sanders Clip The Bay of -Plenty entry for ' the 1958 Sanders Cup contest has been withdrawn. The Manawatu entry has been confirmed and this means that there will be . four yachts to compete at Wel- , lington next month. These will , be from Canterbury, the present ■ holder of the trophy, Wellington, Auckland and Manawatu.
