LONDON SALE

2i Per Cent. Rise Since Friday (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 22. A buoyant tone prevailed and there was a very good clearance of the 11,469 bales ottered at today’s London wool sales. Competition was strong and widespread. Bidding was much keener than at any of last week’s sales. Home trade buyers were active and much greater interest was shown by the Continent. This competition included some considerable buying for more than one Eastern European country. The selection from New Zealand comprised 6300 bales of which 3350 were catalogued in the grease. This was an active section of the market with prices for all qualities of fleece and skirtings 2% per cent, dearer than last Friday. Fine Hoggets Sought A Continental firm was a prominent buyer of fine quality hoggets. This category benefited from Eastern European buying, which also covered medium qualities. The selection of scoureds was undistinguished, but prices remained steady, while among the slipes the only change was an advance of fully 2% per cent, in the prices for medium and good length sheep. Prices for hoggets included 61 %d for 20 bales of 56’s quality, 59d for 21 bales of 50-56’s quality, and 55%d for 23 bales of 50’s quality. Top lines of many clips realised between 55d and 58d. ’
