Polar Artists

Sir,—Under “Staff,” in “The Heart of the Antarctic,” published in 1909, is this note: “George Edward Marston was born at Portsmouth in 1882 and received his art education at Regent Street Polytechnic. He is a qualified art teacher and joined the expedition as artist Unmarried.” There are six of his illustrations in colour in the expedition’s first volume of records and six in the second. One illustration of penguins could stand test beside bird studies by Peter Scott for beauty; these are the first works of art produced at the Pole and under a leader who gave no time off from equally and regularly scheduled general duties shared by all members of the party. The work had often to be done with glove pierced for a brush.—Yours, etc., RECORDS. January 22, 1958.
