INCOME TAX DEMANDS
Assessments Still Going Out While Parliament is discussing implementation of the Government’s election promise to give a rebate of up to £lOO on income tax payable next month, the Inland Revenue Department is still issuing demand notices for tax. An officer of the said yesterday that until the amending legislation was passed and any consequent instructions were received, demands would continue to be sent to taxpayers. No doubt there will be an instruction to taxpayers to deduct £lOO from the top line figure (the amount of tax before the 25 per cent rebate of the National Government is deducted) and to pay any difference. Meanwhile, the department is still issuing demands to some individual taxpayers who were late in putting in their returns. Demands are also being issued to self-employed persons and businesses which had put in a provisional return and obtained an extension of time for filing the complete return. Some taxes are being paid already, but they are a small percentage of the amount assessed. Tfce department is still getting inquiries from taxpayers imagining they will receive a payment of the difference between the rebate they receive and £lOO.
