IGNORED “STOP” SIGN
Pedestrian Fined For Crossing Line A pedestrian, Clarence Woodham, who crossed the main railway crossing at Lyttelton when an engine was approaching was charged at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday with crossing over the line when it was not clear. The police stated that it was the first prosecution of its kind in the Canterbury district Woodham pleaded guilty. .Senior-Sergeant S. C. Browne said the crossing-keeper was showing the “Stop” sign and a constable was standing nearby when Woodham walked across the line. An approaching electric engine, was within 20 yards. Woodham told the Court that he thought the “Stop” sign applied only to vehicles. He considered that .he had ample time to Cross safely. Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M., convicted Woodham and ordered him to pay costa.
