CYCLING G. HILL AND T. WEIR WIN AMATEUR CUPS
Two cups were competed for by amateur riders at the weekly meeting of the combined cycling clubs last evening. The B.A.L. Cup for the B grade rider gaining the most points over three races was won by T. Weir. The H. and T. Cup for the A grade rider with the most points over three races was won by G, Hill. G. Hill rode brilliantly in the half-mile handicap event. With a little less than a lap to go he rode round the field to win by half a length from J. Blance. There was a thrilling finish to the one-mile. The back markers, Hill and R. Fowler, giving away 90 yards, had to ride hard to get up. With just more than two laps to go they were up with the field. At the Dell B. A’Court led out, with T. Kenny on his wheel, ana going round the top banking Kenny xyent into the front, but not for long, for Hill in the back straight went into the lead and was in the front entering the straight. Fowler, who was high up on the track, produced a brilliant sprint to catch Hill and cross the line half a wheel ahead of him.
A very steady pace was maintained in the five-mile scratch race for, A grade riders. A’Court led out at the bell, with Hill on his wheel. Hill took the lead in the back straight and held on to win with ease from Blance.
The four-lap final was a hard race for the back-marker, P. Doyle, who was giving away 140 yards to ’D. Yaxley and H. Sutherland. Doyle rode hard to gather in R. Lucas 30 yards in front of him, and these two teamed well and gradually gathered in the leaders. Going down the back straight B. Woodgate took the lead, but 220 yards from the line Doyle rode at great speed to win by one length. One of the finest finishes of the evening was in the two-lap handicap. On the bottom banking J. Williams, H. Smith, Lucas, D. Swanston, and Giles were spread right across the track. In a blanket finish Giles snatched victory from Williams, with Swanston in third place. Brown, who has been riding very strongly this season, was matched against Giles in a 500metre sprint, and entering the back straight Giles took the lead and was two lengths ahead. Brown rode well over the last 220 yards to improve on Giles, and was only beaten by half a length. Results were:— Amateur Events Quarter-mile B Grade Handicap.— Firrt heat: D. MeGintj(loyd») 1, M.
