Wintry Weather For Start (N2 Press Association—Copynghtt (Rec. 830 p.m.) GLASGOW, January 22. Eighty-five cars left Glasgow early today on the first leg of the 1750-mile drive to the Mediterranean in the 27th Monte Carlo Rally. > The first car, driven by Frank Ward, of Berks well, Warwickshire, moved away from the starting line at 3.41 a.m. There were seven non-starters.
It was bitterly cold with frozen slush on the roads. Drivers were warned •to expect hard-packed snow aH the way to Stranraer, Wigtownshire, the first control point. . Reports reaching Glasgow said that conditions were the worst for years. Glasgow has proved the most popular of the eight starting points —Athens, Oslo, Lisbon, Rome, the Hague, Glasgow, Munich and Paris. Altogether there are 342 entries.
Ip each car, two, and sometimes three, of the crew will live for four days and three nights, facing fatigue, mechanical breakdown, fog, ice and snow. ' . After Stranraer, the Glasgow starters will drive to Barnby Moor (Nottinghamshire) on their way to Dover, where they will embark for Boulogne just before midnight.
