DOGS LOOSE ON ROADS

Hydatid Control

Efforts

The menace of hydatids could be reduced if farmers tied up their dogs at night, Mr R. F. White, said when hydatid eradication was discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury provincial executive of Federated Farmers.

The Otago Provincial Hydatids Committee wrote that although arecoline was useful in dosing dogs, infestation would continue until all offal and carcases were destroyed. One night between Hanmer Springs and Amberley, he had seen 16 dogs wandering on the roads, said. Mr White. He could not guess how many were wandering round the paddocks. The dogs were not only likely offal but were a menace to trie travelling public. Farmers ought to be told to keep their dogs tied up. Reports were made by delegates on the formation of area hydatid committees to carry out voluntary dosing schemes. “It appears that most of Canterbury is covered or about to be covered,” commented the president (Mr J. F. G. Blakely).

Had “offal” been .defined? asked a delegate. Mr R. H. Hiatt said only the lungs, heart, spleen and liver needed to be destroyed. Farmers did not need to destroy intestines or brains.

“It is not difficult to deal with the rest when you are on the job,” remarked the president.
