Early yesterday morning there was a strong north-easterly wind blowing, but by about 9 a.m. it changed to a light north-west wind. So far this year there have been 52 hours of north-west conditions. The hottest time of the day yesterday was a little after 2 p.m.. Hundreds of persons spent their lunch hour at the Centennial Pool. Many others went to the banks of the Avon. At one stage of the early afternoon there was a queue outside the pool entrance in Armagh street, about 50 yards long. The footpaths on either side of the street outside the entrance were lined with bicycles. Some persons, probably those on holiday, did their shopping in the city wearing beach shorts and gaily coloured summer shirts. There was a strong demand for ice cream and cold soft drinks. By early afternoon several shops in Christchurch ran short of ice cream and several others had to have extra supplies of milk delivered to cope with the demand for milk shakes.
The beaches were popular yesterday, and from the early morning there was a stream of traffic towards New Brighton and other beaches. The traffic increased considerably towards the lunch hour period.
