QUALITY AND VALUE
Manufacturers’ Objective
(New Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 19. “We are determined to see that tl\e consumer obtains the greatest possible value for money spent on goods made in our members’ factories/’ said Mr G. W. Lane, president .of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, when replying today to remarks made by the president of the Federation of Labour (Mr F. P. Walsh). “Our federation has within its membership a vejy large proportion of the manufacturers of New Zealand and provided they can obtain the raw materials in the required quantity and of the best possible quality, we shall not allow oUr standards to slip or our service to the consumer to deteriorate,” said Mr Lane. “Mr Walsh said manufacturers should give serious consideration to the questiqp of quality and price of manufactured goods. In doing so, I hope he will remember the important part his. members play in the production of manufactured articles. “We must continue to have the full support of our factory workers in our drive for more production and in our aim to maintain and improve standards. Slipshod work by operatives can quickly undermine the most careful planning and designing of management.
“Along with access to our raw material requirements, this cooperation -from our workers (s most important in our production drive for more quality goods. Mr Walsh and his federation can therefore do a lot to encourage the best possible spirit among our factory employees.” Mr Lane said internal competition in almost every sphere of manufacturing was extremely keen and this was keeping down factory prices and would continue to keep them down. While some prices might fluctuate, depending on movements in prime cost, the federation expected its members and, in fact, all others handling factory goods, to be scrupulously fair in their price policy.
