Average Increase Of .5 Per Cent.

The general level of retail prices showed an increase of .5 per cent, between the end of September and the end of December last year The consumers’ price index rose five points to 1068 (1955 equals 1000) in the four months. The index rose seven joints in the third quarter . and 15 points in the second quarter of 1957. Increases in all the sub groups which comprise the general index were recorded. The all food in-| dex rose by .3 per cent., housing by 1.3 per cent., household operation by .6 per cent., apparel by .2 per cent., -transportation by .6 per cent., and miscelanneous by .3 per cent.

According to an analysis of the causes for . the increase in the period made by the Department of Statistics, higher food prices were responsible for one of the five points. more expensive housing costs for two points and a quarter, items of household operation for three quarters of a point, apparel for a quarter of a point, transport for half a point and increase in miscellaneous price for half a point. The average all-groups consumers’ price index for the four main centres was 1069: Auckland 1066. Wellington 107 ff, Christchurch 1066,' Dunedin 1073.
