SWIMMING Fast Times Recorded At Kaiapoi Carnival

Although many of Christchurch’s prominent swimmers were away on holiday, those who took part in the first inter-club carnival of the New Year at the Kaiapoi baths on Saturday were in fine form Six particularly good times were recorded during the afternoon — three of them provincial records. Heavy rain prevented the final races on the programme being held. , . . <

With the national junior and intermediate championships at Dungdin only three weeks away ai)d the senior titles to be held in Christchurch in four weeks’ time, most of the swimmers are at, or approaching, peak form. An outstanding time was that set in the 220 yards freestyle event by a junior girl, Lynn Harrow. Swimming x with a remarkably smooth style for her age, she recorded 3min 7.ssec, which is nine seconds faster than the previous Canterbury record. In the same race was her brother, Patrick Harrow, who was the winner in 3min 4.6 sec. Both seem likely to represent Canterbury at Dunedin. In the 100 yards breaststroke, Miss Wendy Pearce, of the Spreydon club, was timed at 87.5 sec for a new intermediate girls’ redord. The old record was 88.8 sec. Miss Pearce, who was a Canterbury representative swimmer last season, has consistently bettered her times this season.

In the same race, C. Johnson, a Fendalton swimmer, also set up a new intermediate boys’ record when he raced the two lengths of the pool in 74sec—2.4sec faster than the previous tecord held by A R. Peters.

An intermediate competitor who is making a big name for himself in surfing as well as swimming is R. Blair (Spreydon) who on Saturday went very close to taking a record for the 220 yards freestyle. His time of 2min was only .2sec outside the record. Graham Dann (Beckenham), lastv year’s national junior freestyle sprint champion, did not reach his top form and his time was surprisingly slow. McFadden Brothers Colin McFadden (Spreydon), who recently set up a New Zealand record for the 440 yards, swam the distance in 4min 59.8 sec on Saturday—not his best but nevertheless a very fast time for an intermediate. McFadden has been recording 4min 53sec in unofficial races over 440 yards at Auckland, and is already being strongly favoured for selection for the Empire Games at Cardiff. His performances at the Canterbury championships this week will be watched with interest.

Swimming in the same race was Graham McFadden, who although somewhat dimmed by the brilliance of his young brother, left no doubts as to his ability by swimming one of the fastest backstroke races over 440 yards ever recorded in Canterbury. Clocking smin 21.8 sec, he was llsec faster than the Canterbury senior record over the distance, and well within the national time. However, because the race was a handicap one, McFadden will be unable to claim his time as a record.

The Bishop Cup, awarded annually for diving, was won by Miss M. Scott, of the Wharenui club. In a close points decision, she beat J. Farquhar (St. Albans). A notable absentee from the competition was the -New Zealand junior and intermediate boys’ diving champion, R. L. Hodge (Spreydon).
