GOOD WIN FOR NORTHERN

Central Reaten By 223 Runs (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, Jan. 19. Northern Districts gained its first Plunket Shield success when it defeated Central Districts by 223 runs at Hamilton yesterday. It was a game full of surprises and Northern Districts really established itself by batting so well against such a strong bowling side and dismissing Central Districts for 113 and 51. The wicket cannot be blamed as Northern scored 271 on the pitch in which Central could only get 113 yesterday. The pitch was .soft after rain but the batsmen got themselves out mostly. Northern continued its second innings and the instructions “get runs quickly or get out” was followed very literally, the score slumping from three for 102 to eight -for 116. All five batsmen were caught. Lissette then declared. Left with 274 to get in 230 minutes Central started badly, losing three wickets for 14. The opening batsmen, K. Smith and H. B. Cave, fought hard to stave off defeat and stayed together for an hour* for 12 runs. The wicketkeeper, E. C. Petrie, who had five catches «in the first innings, was in splendid form and took another three catches. T Puna finished the innings with a fine spell of spin bowling, taking four wickets for two runs from seven overs. T. Shaw, Northern’s opening batsman, enhanced his prospects of making the New Zealand team with a fine double—7B and 40 He is a fine attacking batsman who goes for his shots and punches them hard.
