BIG ENTRIES FOR ANNUAL SPORTS AT DUNSANDEL
After cancellation because of rain on New Year’s Day, the Dunsandel Sports Association’s annual neeting was held on Saturday. The bright sunny morning attracted many visitors and entries for both cash and amateur cycling events were greatly increased. Because of the big programme an early start was made and the events were keptsup to time. Early in the afternoon threatening rain clouds started banking up in the south and then it became a race not against the clock, but against the weather. The order of events was changed to get the championships off before the rain came. The championships were decided, but when the riders were getting on their marks for the one ahd a half mile cash race the rain began and within seconds the track was so slippery the race was not started. So heavy was the rain that at about 3.30 p.m. the, meeting had to be abandoned. Good Times Recorded The day track was inclined to be a little loose and although good times were recorded it was hard going all the way. In the shorter races the back markers were handicapped out of any chance of getting up for the final sprints. They were more liberally treated in the longer events and were able to get up, usually with more than a lap to go. R. Lucas rode some grand races from the back mark in the handicap events, and got up to dispute the finish, but hp had nothing in reserve for the final sprint and he had to be content with minor placings
R. Fowler was the best of the amateurs, but handicapping prevented him from taking a major prize, which he deserved for the excellent way he rode. B. A’Court rode a sterling race over two miles for the Amateur Challenge Cup, and his brilliant final sprint to hold off Fowler was a classic. K. Giles proved himself a real champion he won the halfmile North Canterbury Championship from two other • outstanding riders, Lucas and Swanston. M. Courtney, is having his first season in the cash, athletic ranks after being a prominent amateur, had a real field day Apart from winning the 220 yards North Canterbury Championship he was also first home in the 220 yards handicap and second in the 100 yards.
