Canterbury Girls Lose Final
(New Zealana Press Association i PALMERSTON NORTH, Jan. The Wellington junior boys’, lawn tennis team won the Slazenger shield for the first time in the history of the Interprovincial competition, when it met and beat the powerful Auckland team by 14 sets to 12 in the final at Palmerston North today. The result was a real surprise for Auckland players hold the top seedings for the national championships which will begin in Palmerston North on Tuesday. Both teams secured five straight-out wins, all of Wellington’s coming from the singles. Canterbury, the holder, was beaten in the semi-finals by Wellington. Not surprisingly, Auckland had little difficulty in retaining the Howe shield for girls for the second year in succession. It beat Canterbury in the final by 10 matches to 0. The Auckland girls also provide the top seedings,for the national championships. The promising Wellington College pupil, J. Souter, was in outstanding form and had straight-set wins over R. A. Wong and J. H. Ldckington, No 1 and 2 seeds respectively for the national championships. Unseeded, R. Greenwood, also secured two wins, over C. Pascoe, seeded third, and A. Chester, seeded seventh. Top seed for the national under 17 championship, R. Clarke, talso beat Pascoe in straight sets.
