TRUCK CONVERSION ADMITTED
Chase By Owner
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 13.
Two young men who took a tow truck from outside a garage in Titahi Bay on Saturday night, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court today. They were lan James Michael Tasker, aged 19, a workman. and Nicholas John Treacy. aged 25, a workman. Both were charged with converting a truck, valued at £l6OO. Both pleaded guilty and were remanded for a probation officer’s report. The police prosecutor (Mr K. O. Evans) said the owner of the truck had given chase in his own car and met a traffic officer, Mr W. Bevan, who followed the truck to Tawa Flat.
The truck stopped suddenly and two men jumped out and ran from the road. Mr Evans said the traffic officer found Treacy hiding in the backyard of a house. While he was apprehending Treacy, the officer heard a crash and found that the truck had run down the road, hit his car, and both had gone over a small bank. Damage amounting to £6O was done to the car. He said Tasker was found some 200 yards along the road from where the truck had stopped.
