Maori Gold Wins At Caulfield
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, January 13. The New Zealand-bred horse Maori Gold almost broke the course record time when he led all the way to win the Norman by Handicap (one mile) at Caulfield on Saturday. Maori Gold had won his previous start over the same course and distance, but started at the surprisingly good price of 11/2. The New Zealand horse, Zariba, backed from 6/1 to 9/2, started favourite. Zariba was well placed until the turn, where his condition gave out, and he weakened to beat only three home. Maori Gold's time of Imin 36 7-10 sec was only a fifth of a second outside the Caulfield record. Maori Gold was best away and quickly set up a three-length lead. Although challenged over the last furlong by Solvarge (66/1) he went to the post strongly to beat that horse by threequarters of a length. The consistent Brocken (13/2) was three lengths away third. Results:— NORMANBY HANDICAP, One mile. MAORI GOLD by Sabaean—Hornet’s Nest 7-13 .. R. Mallyon 1 Solvarge by Solvive—Podarge 7-2 N. Pyatt 2 Brocket by Pamphilos—Alpine Maid 8-8 W. Williamson 3
