Disintegration Of Sputnik I

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MOSCOW, January 7. The Soviet Academy of Science announced yesterday that Sputnik I had disintegrated. American Associated Press quoted an academy spokesman who said a formal announcement of the last days of the satellite would be released as soon as final observations and studies had been completed. An earlier report from Berlin said Soviet scientists believed the satellite burned out when it entered the lower layers of the atmosphere.
