Canterbury To Fore In National Yachting
WITHIN the next few weeks ’’ Canterbury yachtsmen will take part in various national contests.
Regarded by many as New Zealand's leading yachting province. Canterbury should do well considering the high standard of her representation. Many of this year’s representatives have sailed at the same contests in previous years. They include S. Loader, who, with his brother in 1956, sailed for Port Christchurch in the Cornwell Clip; M. Tyson, last year’s representative for the Tanner Cup, and the Holland brothers, who represented Port Kaiapoi in the Cornwell Cup in 1951 and in 1952. The Manders No yachting contest would be complete without the Mander brothers Peter and Graham who finished first and second in the Leander Trophy in Wellington last week.
John Morrison will sail for the Sanders Cup. His father, F. Morrison, represented Canterbury in the 1920’s in this event. The Sanders Cup race is the oldest national contest in New Zealand, and Canterbury heads the list of provincial winners. John Morrison will again sail Pinta, in which he won the event at Akaroa last year. A combination of the new terylene sails and constant practice
by the crew have improved Pinta’s performance since the beginning of this season, and should be strong in the defence of her title. The cup will be contested at the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, near Wellington, from February 17. Five provinces will participate. They are Auckland, Wellington,
Bay of Plenty, Manawatu and Canterbury. This year’s Moffat Cup will be sailed at Nelson on February 10. Canterbury will be represented by Merv. Holland, with Concern. His crew will be his brother, A. Holland and Q. Pawson. Idlealongs The Holland brothers have been sailing for many years and have had fair success. Since 1952 they have sailed Idlealongs in Canterbury trials, and their keenness and practice together, along with last year’s contest experience, Will make them a force to be reckoned with at Nelson on February 10. Canterbury will be represented in the Tanner Cup by Melvyn Tyson, aged 15. After an excellent performance at the contest last year, he gained second place. He is the son of Clem Tyson, 1956 Moffat Cup representative for Canterbury. Wellington is the venue of this year's Tanner Cup contest, which is for boys and girls under 16, in] P class Tauranga yachts (seven' feet). Melvyn Tyson will sail in Olympic, the yacht his father built, and in which this prominent young yachtsman has been first across the line many, times. This season will be the last that he will sail in the P Class, and popular opinion considers he has an excellent chance of winding National honours.
