Magistrate’s Court Two Charges Of Theft Of Money Admitted

Karoly Kohalmi, a Hungarian ■rkman, aged 21, who appeared |gthe Magistrate’s Court yesterRgr on two charges of theft involving £l3O 10s 6d, the property of Henry Thomas Perkins, wds remanded to January 13 for a probation officer’s report and sentence. Mr Rex C. Abernethy was on the Bench.

Detective-Sergeant E. G. Ward said that the money, two cheques, a social security voucher and £93 10s in notes, was stolen from the complainant on December 2. A further £lO was stolen from the cash register at his grocery store on December 28. The accused,

who had been befriended by the complainant’s daughter, and had

eaten a meal with them at the residence behind the store on the day of the theft, was suspected When interviewed he admitted the offences. Since November 4, when he was dismissed from a city factory, he had been unemployed. He had been in no previous trouble in this country, said Detective-Ser-geant Ward. Bail in the sum of £5O with one surety of. £lOO was allowed. SHIP DESERTION William John Harrison . (Mr J G. Rutherford) was convicted and fined £lO on a charge of deserting the Port Halifax at New Plymouth on January 8, 1947. Mr R. G. Penlington appeared for the shipping company. Mr Rutherford gave notice of the defendant’s intention to apply, under the new amendment to the Shipping and Seamen Act, for permission to stay in New Zealand. He said the circumstances of the case were unusual.

It appeared that the crew of the ship were highly unruly, and when the defendant had supported one of the engineers who had been assaulted,' certain threats were made to him and he thought it better to desert for his own safety. Since then he had been working in New Zealand and had several certificates of discharge from New Zealand ships which were evidence of his ability and good character. He had married a New Zealand woman who was

now an invalid, and he appeared to be a steady, hardworking man. After hearing a probation officer’s report the Magistrate said that although as a rule such an offender was detained in custody, in certain circumstances, as in this case, he could be released on bail in the first instance. Bail was allowed in the sum of £ 100, with one surety of £ 100 on condition that the defendant lives where directed, and reports each week to the central police station, does not change his employment without the direction of the police, and makes an application in writing for permission to stay in the country within seven days. THEFT OF MONEY Ronald Albert Hall, aged 22, a labourer, was remanded to Janu-

ary 13 for a probation officer’s report and sentence on a charge of stealing £25, the property of Albert George White, on December 20, at Christchurch.

Detective-Sergeant E. G. Ward said the complainant was working with the accused at Riccarton and, at the end of the day, noticed that £25 had been taken from his wallet which contained £39. tVhen interviewed by the police the accused admitted the theft and said he had spent all the money in buying a radio and spare parts for his car. Bail was allowed in the sum of £lOO with one surety of £lOO. REMANDED On a charge of driving a motor vehicle in Armagh street while he was under the influence of liquor or drugs, Graham Robert Halkett, a farm labourer, of Rotherham, was remanded to January 23.

Bail of £25, with one surety of £25, was renewed. Trevor Alexander Anderson, aged 34, a workman, was remanded to January 13 on a charge of stealing 9s 7£d, the property of Richard Grofsky and others, on January 5. Bail of £2O with one surety of £25 was allowed and the defendant is to report daily to the police. Charged with receiving the sum of £l3 Ils 9£d on terms requiring him to account for this amount to William Morris Turner and with fraudulently failing to do so. George Robert Edge, aged 22, a shearer, was remanded to appear at Timaru on January 23.

Bail was allowed in the sum of £2O and one surety of £2O. Donald Miller, aged 24, a striker’s assistant, pleaded guilty to a charge of wilful obscene exposure in the Botanic Gardens on December 26 and was remanded to January 13 for a probation officers’ report and sentence. Bail was allowed in the sum of £5O and one surety of £5O. A man, aged 34, whose name was ordered not to be published, was remanded to January 9 on a charge of wilful obscene exposure in a public place. Bail was allowed in the sum of £5O and one surety of £5O. Derek Gordon Hair, aged 25, was remanded in custody to January 9 on a charge of deserting from the overseas vessel Athenic at Lyttelton on October 28. THEFT OF RADIO Louis Albert Upton, aged 53, a driver, pleaded guilty to stealing a radio valued at £8 10s, the property of Winsome Loose on December 23. Detective-Sergeant E. G. Ward said a complaint had been received from a second-hand dealer’s shop on Lincoln road of the theft of a radio. The accused, who had a list of previous convictions, admitted taking the radio from a counter in the shop and selling it for £2. Upton was remanded in custody to January 13 for a probation officer’s report and sentence.
