FIRST DAY OF FOURS AT BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Surprising Defeats In Opening Rounds

t.Z ' ? u ? sh, " e was th « only major surprise at nal howimg tournament in Christchurch evprt A j er < a Week O “ Which rain has fallen awel™™ interrupted play on three days, it was fi C J’ a " ge , for the 1958 Payers taking part ’A" days play in the fours. Because of the neavy rain on Sunday, play was delayed until 1 p.m. p,ayed to the afternoon, but they were limited to two hours and a quarter or 25 heads.

. , AP ar t from the weather, the surprises of the u Were the two defeats of A. C. Snaddon was runner-up to C. G. L. Spearman i 954 P^ lrs tltle ’ and also a member of the "™ p *re Games team at Vancouver. Other losses were suffered by well-known players, including T. W. J. r \° n J M S al, S r) ’. E - P - Exe,by (Frankton Junc\W - Fleming (Victoria), c. Skoglund Faimerston North), C. G. L. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.), E. H. Ravenwood (North-east Valley) and the Christchurch player remaining in the singles, S. J. Snedden (Linwood). In the fours, each team will play eight games, and to qualify for post-section play, must win at least hx. These post-section rounds will be played on Friday, on the sudden death system.

Considering the 97 points of rain which fell up to 9 a.m. yesterday, it was surprising how well the greens rolled out and when play commenced they were reasonably fast. The bowls were taking a very full draw, and many fours took some time to become accustomed to these conditions. In the second games, the sky clouded oyer once more and the greens tightened up considerably and made the drawing less accurate. Several games were won only on the last head, but in the main games were very open and in some cases run-away wins were secured. One such was the game between J. Gibson (Beckenham) and C. Howe (Patumahoe). Howe led 24-0 at the turn of the board, and Gibson secured his first point on the twelfth head. Howe went on to win 35-4. P. C. Skoglund Loses J. D. Crisp (Temuka) provided the main surprise on the Shirley green in the second round when he trounced the four skipped by the young Northern bowler, P. C. Skoglund, one of the three remaining bowlers with two lives in the singles. Crisp’s four played consistently good bowls, and their win of 20-9 was the reward for solid team-work. Skoglund’s four found considerable difficulty in handling the short heads used by Crisp and the draw on a green which rapidly dried out. Crisp led throughout, and Skoglund won only five of the nineteen heads played. Another surprise was the loss of one of the most noted Christchurch fours skipped by S. J. Snedden (Linwood) to H. G. Dailey (Shirley). When the last head began Dailey had a lead of one point. Snedden was lying one down on the last head and with a beautiful draw shot failed to take the shot by only one and a half inches to give Dailey a 17-15 win. Dailey’s knowledge of the Shirley green undoubtedly helped him to victory. W. H. Hampton (Nae Nae), one of the players left in the singles, had two easy wins. He beat C. Madsen (Cashmere) 23-16 and F. Mitchell (Tahunanui) 26-11. One of the closest finishes was provided by E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction) and the less-fancied four skipped by T. F. Playfair (Fendalton). At the end of the sixth head Exelby led 11-3 and increased this lead to 14-3 after the eighth head. Some excellent play by his third, D. C. Wilson, helped Playfair to take the next seven heads to lead 15-14 after the sixteenth. Playfair continued to press home the advantage and at the twentieth end there was a difference of only two points in the score. Two shots on the twenty-first head put Exelby in a favourable position. Time was called during the twenty-second end and after an excellent head Playfair took two shots. Exelby won 21-19.

Exelby, one of the two-lifers left in the pairs, then went on to lose to J. C. Neill (Oamaru R.S.A.), 20-17), in another close finish. Last Year’s Winners As was the case in the singles last week when J. Pirret jun. lost to a relatively unknown player, last year’s title winner of the fours, M. R. Buchan (Tui Park) was surprisingly beaten in his first game by F. B. Hickman’s Sydenham four. Buchan was leading comfortably at one stage, but as the game progressed, the Sydenham team settled down and judged the green better than their opponents. Hickman did not even look like taking the lead over the first eleven ends and at the turn of the board was trailing 7-10. At the sixth head, Buchan had had a lead of 9-1, but over the remaining heads the Sydenham players added 16 points to their total while Buchan scored only six. The favoured Carlton four of W. H. Woods, L. G. Donaldson, A. Connew, and T. T. Skoglund (skip) were always masters of the situation in their two matches at the Mount Pleasant green. Skoglund led his team ably, and although the others lapsed at times, he was always reliable for drawing the wjnning bowl or driving to burn the head when the advantage was against him. In the first match against the Shirley four skipped by E. Horsfall, the Carlton players consistently outplayed their opposite numbers. They trounced them 32-9, and went on to beat the Waverley four skipped by C. H. Faul, 23-10.

Mangakino Four It was also a field day for the highly-skilled four from Mangakino, skipped by H. H. J. Robson, who were the winners at Dunedin in 1956. Robson is a beautifully smooth draw-player. Given more than able support from the other members of the four, he accounted for R. Powell (Fendalton), 25-11, and E. H. Taylor (Phoenix), 18-12. Apart from T. T. Skoglund’s Carlton four, Robson’s team was the most impressive of the day. One of Dunedin’s foremost players and an Empire Games nnminpp, G. H. Jolly and his Leith four were on form when they took

the rink on the St. Albans green His first game against L. W. Barwell (Linwood) brought some really polished play, and his 28-9 win was the result of sound drawing by each member of his team. A member of the tournament committee, F. W. Larcombe (Opawa) also went down to Jolly, 27-14. The . strong Hamilton four skipped by M. G. “Mate” Borich, who retains two lives in the singles, had a run-away win over the four of A. C. Cain (Christchurch W.M.C.) 33-12. Although Borich consistently got his team out of trouble, it was noticeable that his third, W. R. Hawkins, is not the same player as when Borich and he won the pairs title in 1955. The Hamilton team was rather scratchy in its win over K. G. Aitchison (Hampden), 18-13. W. L. Grace (Rawhiti, Auckland), a delightful player k and who has a. pleasing personality, had little difficulty in his two games. E. J. C. Hay (Cashmere) went down 23-19, and in a game of tactics defeated the Kew four skipped by T. D. Mclntosh. Miramar Four Beaten Another surprise was the defeat of the strong Miramar four skipped by T. W. J. Barron. Barron has not had a very successful tournament this year, although he is one of Wellington’s leading players. His loss to the low-rated Amberley team skipped by R. A. Croft was difficult to understand. Barron’s team-mates, try as they might, could not get the weight of the green, and their total of 16 points included one phenomenal burst of eight on- one head when they showed a glimpse of their true form. They lost 26-16 in a game, which apart from that one head, was particularly dull.

W. P. O’Neill, skip of another very strong Carlton four and an Empire Games nominee, was in fine form in his games. As his number three, he has C. H. Wiggins, another Auckland Games nominee. The four won their first game, 38-11, one of the highest scores of the day, and his second game *was won in 23-14. G. A. James and J. R. Trayes, the other members of O’Neill’s team, make up a strong combination, and must be favourably considered as likely title-winners. Results were:—
