TROTTING Greymouth Cup Success To Staraider

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, January 6. Staraider won her third race in less than a fortnight when she finished on too strongly for McGimpy in the Greymouth Cup, the main race and second leg of the double, on the final day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s summer meeting today.

Staraider revelled in the heavy going, and led over the last nine furlongs. She . was hotly challenged by McGimpy over the last half mile, but she had too much in reserve in the straight, and won stylishly by three-quarters of a length.

Formerly owned and trained on the West Coast, Staraider is an aged mare by Paraider from Margaret Grattan. She is raced and trained at Islington by G. Bennett, and was well handled by R. Curtin, who drove her when she paid more than £B5 for a win at Ashburton on December 28. Staraider is a noted performer in bad ground, and after her win on the first day of the meeting she was at the surprisingly good odds of almost 13 to 1 today. McGimpy followed up a good placing on Saturday with a sound second, but found the task of conceding the winner a start of 48 yards too great. Crystal Star finished fast for third, with the others well beaten. Dismiss was a very hot favourite, but she was not a possibility over the last mile, and finished well down the-track. First Leg The first leg of the double, the Railway Handicap, was won most decisively by Becky Medoro, which handled the sloppy conditions in fine style. The Becky Medoro-Stairaider doubles combination returned £llB 38 for £l. The meeting opened in showery weather, before a surprisingly large attendance. The track was sloppy for the first few races, and horses and drivers were liberally coated in mud. For most of the time the drivers were blinded. The weather brightened and was fine for the Greymouth Cup. However, the track remained

heavy. On-course, the totalisator handled £29,402 10s, including £2937 on the double, compared with £28.599 10s on the corresponding day last year. The off-course total today, of £22,473 15s was a record offcourse turnover for the club. The on-course total for the meeting was £58,198, compared with £50.476 10s.

D. J. White, the driver of Drioli in the Dominion Handicap, was fined £lO for misjudging the number of rounds. Greymouth Cup Running Empire Globe broke, and Dismiss was slow at the start of the Greymouth Cup. Weekender led

out, but she was passed by Surie Queen at the end of two furlongs. Dismiss took advantage of the leisurely pace to race into the lead with one mile and a quarter left. One furlong further on. Staraider pulled her way clear. She was joined by McGimpy with four furlongs to run and this pair, with Zetland, raced clear of the field in the back straight McGimpy •nd Staraider were on terms two . lengths in front of Zetland at the straight entrance, with four lengths to Technician and Weekender. Staraider soon shook off McGimpy and came on to win decisively by three-quarters of a length. Hie Westport Handicap winner, McGimpy. battled on well for second a length and a half in front of the fast finishing Crystal Star, which broke with seven furlongs to run and checked Weekender and Revelation. He was well back on the home bend and put in a great run for his placing. Zetland tired in the straight and was four lengths back fourth, clear of Weekender, with Technician. Dismiss, which did not appear to be pacing kindly over the last mile, and Lord Mackworth next. Becky Medoro Surprises Becky Medoro upset calculations with a good win in the first leg of the double, the Railway Handicap. General Advance led out. but at the end of two furlongs and a half Becky Medoro worked clear. Brawl moved up to join Becky Medoro racing to the straight where they were three lengths in front of General Advance, Black Satin and Fyvie Queen (together), and Super Attack. Becky Medoro moved clear of Brawl early in the run home, but Brawl came again and ran Becky Medoro to half a length. Brawl paced a sound race from the second line to hold on for second a short length in front of the fastfinishing Super Attack. He was never far away, but appeared to drift slightly over the last half-mile. He came home well along the inner two lengths in front of the favourite. Genera! Advance, which had every chance. Fyvie Queen made up ground for fifth, ahead of Skean Dhu. Black Satin and Springvale. Beau Caincre. which was pulled up. Red Arion, Buren, Skean Dhu and Seagull gave ground at the start Weekender Wins Sprint Weekender made amends for an unlucky fifth in the Greymouth Cup. with an easy, all the way. win in the Electric Handicap. She accelerated smartly at the start, and led through the straight with one mile left, from Lord Mackworth and Zetland. She was still pacing easily in front of these two horada racing to the straight with Empire Globe moving quickly

round the outside, ahead of Revelation and Reticent. Weekender had too much in reserve for the others, and she won with something in hand by three lengths from Reticent, which made up a lot of ground from the home turn. Reticent was in the

middle of the field all the way and he did well to finish so close up. Empire Globe broke at the start, and was towards the rear most of the way. He put in a strong run wide out approaching the straight and lasted long enough to take third place, half a head in front of Lord Mackworth. Zetland and Revelation were right up next, clear of Charlotte Belt Dark Valley broke badly and was pulled up, and Surie Queen broke at the start Results:— RUNANGA HANDICAP, of £200; trotters; 3min 56sec class; one mile and five furlongs.—7, 7 COMPOSITE (7) 36 O.
