VENEZUELAN REVOLT

“Could Be Prelude”

WASHINGTON, January .3

The “Washington Post” said today that the abortive revolt, in Venezuela could be a prelude of further troubles for President Jiminez Perez.

“There is ample evidence that the Venezuelan despot is one of the harshest and most hated tn the Western Hemisphere/’ it said in a leading article.

It said that ’ President Jiminez Perez had been able to perpetuate his power only by suspending the Constitution, gagging the press, imprisoning the leaders of the only opposition party, and staging a “blatantly-rigged” plebiscite.

“It would be wise for those United States interests who have lent their prestige to this regime to consider carefully the possible consequences,” the “Washington Post” said.

“Dictators who are desjpised by their subjects frequently come to inglorious ends. “And there is a grim symbolism in the fact that when General Jiminez Perez purchased a 9000 dollar Cadillac recently, its 21,000 dollars worth of special equipment included a weapons compartment for two sub-machine guns.”
