Canon Wins For Second Time At Invercargill

INVERCARGILL, January 5.

The weather was fine for the second day of the Southland Rating Club’s summer meeting, and the track, with the sting out of it early provided good going. There was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £49,299 5s compared with £49,404 5s on the second day last year, a decrease of £lO5. The turnover for the meeting totalled £91,491 10s, compared with £89,895, an increase of £ 1596 .10s. The successful double, Canon and Master David, returned £B2 16s fbr £l.

When the field went out to do its preliminary in the Southland Handicap Defallock started bucking and his rider, R. J. Skelton, was thrown heavily and suffered slight concussion. On a doctor’s advice he stood down for the rest of the day. In the second division of the Makarewa Handicap, Tarsus (N. W. Lewis), which drew No. 1 position at the barrier, jumped out well, but turned sharp left down the chute onto the steeplechase course and took no further part in the race.
