Athletics AUSTRALIAN WOMEN AT GISBORNE
Miss Matthews Breaks Provincial Record
(New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, January 5 The Australian Olympic sprinters Marlene Matthews and Fleur Mellor together with Valerie Sloper. were guest stars at an athletic meeting al Gisborne yesterday. Both the Australian girls partici pated in separate 100 yards events. Miss Matthews winning in 11.2 sec, a Poverty Bay record, and Miss Mellor in 11.6 sec.
In the women’s shot put. Miss Sloper recorded 49ft 7»iin. The 75 yards women’s sprint was won by Margaret Stuart (Hastings) in B.Bsec Miss Stuart also won the 80 metres hurdles in 11.6 sec, a Pov<*rtv Bay record
Miss Sloper won the women’s discus. with 158 ft Sin.
Idle and Disorderly.— Gordon Ernest Waller aged 34. a mill hand, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday with being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful visible means of support He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called on. Mr J. L. Ives, JP. and Mr W W. Laing, J.P., were on the Bench.
