STANDARD FARM BUILDINGS

Free Supply Of Plans The free issue of architectdrawn plans and specifications for such buildings as garages, hay barns and other farm structures is proving an important part of the service now being provided by members of the New Zealand Timber Merchants* Federation, says a press release received from the federation.

Working in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture and with some local bodies, the federation has already completed plans and specifications for two types of garages and a hay barn. These are available from member timber yards, and the buildings can be erected either by tradesmen or on a “do it yourself’ basis. Most popular of the farm building designs so far has been the hay barn, of which more than 1000 sets of plans have already been distributed. Recent discussions between the federation and the Department of Agriculture have indicated that there is a definite demand for the small woolshed type of building, which lends itself to wood construction. There is also some demand for cowsheds, but as a floor and part-wall construction in concrete is more easily cleaned, the federation has decided to concentrate on those buildings in which timber has a pronounced advantage.

According to departmental figures, a potential market for some 1400 woolsheds exists. The services of a nationally-known architect will be secured to design a building which will suit all 'needs, the federation says.
