WARNING BY STEVENSON

“No-One Can Win Arms Race” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CHICAGO, January 1. Mr Adlai Stevenson, in a New Year’s ,Eve statement, said that no-one could ever win the present arms race and urged the United States to emphasise its basic peaceful purposes. Mr Stevenson, the twicedefeated Democratic Presidential candidate, said he issued the statement in response to numerous requests. “The New Year arrives at a perilous time,” Mr Stevenson said, "when America is confronted with a fateful paradox. There is a race of arms in which we must again draw abreast, but this has now become a race that no-one, neither we nor any other nation, can ever win.

“My greatest concern is that the division between the East and West is getting harder. “So we must emphasise our basic peaceful purposes which the weapons only exist to protect. “And it is well to remind ourselves of the lessons of the satellites—that we are part of the human family arid must learn to live not only with our allies but our adversaries.”
